Choosing textured paving slabs

Textured paving slabs add surface detail to an outdoor space, from the subtle character of limestone to the grain of granite and the layered appearance of slate. This collection brings together natural stone paving with different finishes for patios, paths and seating areas. Compare the material and the individual finish as well as the colour: two grey slabs can feel and look very different when laid.

Limestone, granite or slate?

Limestone paving offers black, grey and yellow colour options in this range. Yellow limestone can include buff, cream, honey and grey tones, with natural variation across a pack. Compare the sawn-edge options with the honed and brushed products. Sawn edges describe the sides of a slab, rather than guaranteeing a smooth face. Black limestone also weathers and can lighten over time, so consider its changing appearance when planning your patio.

Granite paving has a distinctive mineral grain and suits simple, contemporary layouts. Silver grey and blue/black options offer contrasting palettes. Flamed granite has a surface texture produced by heat treatment; check the selected product for its exact finish, dimensions and availability.

Slate paving brings layered stone character, with blue/black and rustic copper options in the collection. Natural colour and surface variation are part of its appearance. View a sample where available and compare photographs of completed projects before choosing.

Textured paving versus riven paving

Textured is a broad description of the surface. Riven is a particular finish formed by splitting stone along its natural layers. A textured finish may instead be created through a treatment such as flaming or brushing. If you prefer the naturally split face and earthy colours of sandstone, compare our riven paving slabs. Choose according to the actual product specification rather than assuming every textured slab has the same feel or performance.

Sizes and patio layouts

The collection includes mixed-size packs, 600 ร— 900 mm rectangles and selected 600 ร— 600 mm squares. Mixed sizes create a varied pattern, while repeated rectangles or squares give a more regular layout. Thickness and pack coverage differ between products, so check these details before calculating your order. Availability also varies across the range; use the stock status on each listing or contact us for alternatives.

Is textured paving slip resistant?

A textured surface alone is not a slip rating or a guarantee against slipping. Wet leaves, algae, frost and standing water can affect any patio. Choose a product suitable for the intended use, plan adequate drainage and keep the surface clean. For steps, ramps or other areas with specific performance requirements, ask for the relevant product information before ordering.

Installation and maintenance

Plan the supporting base, bedding, joints and drainage with your installer. Our installation guide explains the main considerations. Patio slabs should not be assumed suitable for vehicle use without checking the product and the proposed construction.

Sweep regularly and choose cleaning and sealing products suitable for the stone. Avoid acidic cleaners on limestone and test any treatment on a small, inconspicuous area first. Browse our paving accessories and check compatibility with your chosen finish.
