Mixed size paving slabs and natural stone patio packs

A mixed-size patio pack combines several slab dimensions in set quantities. Often called a project pack, it creates a varied pattern instead of a uniform grid. This format works well in cottage gardens, courtyards and larger seating areas, where the changing slab sizes complement the colour and texture of natural stone.

This collection includes different materials and finishes, so start with the look you want and then compare pack contents, thickness and coverage. Check individual product stock status before planning your installation.

Choose your stone, colour and finish

Indian sandstone paving offers a broad choice of natural tones. Choose Kandla Grey for a neutral palette, or compare Raj Green and Autumn Brown for earthy colour variation. Fossil Mint, Camel Buff, Raj Blend and Rippon Buff provide further options in this range. Riven surfaces have natural texture, while Ivory Mint honed and sawn sandstone offers a smoother appearance.

Limestone paving offers another natural stone option, including black, grey and yellow mixed-size packs. Yellow limestone can feature buff, cream, honey and grey tones. Slate adds layered character, while silver grey granite has a distinctive mineral grain. Availability varies between these materials.

How do mixed-size laying patterns work?

A random-looking patio still needs a plan. Use the laying pattern and slab quantities for the specific pack, and dry-plan the layout before installation. This helps position cuts around walls, steps and edges without using up one slab size too early.

Many patio packs contain four sizes, but do not assume every product has identical dimensions or quantities. Check whether the quoted sizes are nominal and what joint width the pattern requires. Blend natural stone from different packs during laying to distribute colour variation across the patio.

How many patio packs do I need?

Measure the area in square metres, add an allowance for cuts and wastage, then divide by the coverage of your chosen pack. If buying full packs, round up to the next whole pack. Confirm whether the stated coverage includes joints, and follow the product guidance on waste allowances. Complex edges and angled patterns may need more material.

For example, a 30 mยฒ patio with a 10% allowance needs 33 mยฒ of paving coverage. Use the actual product coverage to calculate your order; this example does not mean every stone or layout needs the same allowance. Ask us to check your quantities if you are unsure.

Thickness, installation and care

Mixed size describes the slab dimensions, not the thickness or surface finish. Compare each listing carefully, particularly when joining a new patio to existing paving. Plan a suitable base, full bedding support, joints and drainage with your installer, and read our paving installation guide before starting.

Keep paving clear of leaves and use cleaning products suitable for the stone. Avoid acidic cleaners on limestone. Natural colour and texture vary between slabs, so a sample is a useful guide rather than an exact representation of a full patio pack.
